Is this an endless debate? Or does it have an answer? Do eye creams work? Is it necessary to spend a huge amount on eye creams? Why not use the regular cream? So Eye cream is JUST a myth for marketing? Some will use an eye cream no matter if it does or not anything. And then there are people like me, who never used any eye cream nor are willing to.
I have seen my roommate who used to apply eye cream two times a day. She told me, Laharee you’ll get two when you’ll hit 23. I’m 25 this is what my eye looks like.
I know, even you can’t see in the picture, I have light dark circles, moderate eye bags, and my eyes look full of stress. No, I don’t have a very dark circle because the dark circle is also dependent on genetics. I use my regular toner-moisturizers all over my face.
Slogans of Eye-Creams – Claims
- REMOVE Dark Circles!
- BRIGHTEN Under Eye Area!
- REPAIR Wrinkles! REMOVE Fine Lines!
- REDUCE Eye Bags or Puffiness!
Some eye creams claim all the above lines some are specific about their claims. I’m sure only one percent of the eye creams or less than that can bring any difference. The more claim the package has, the more buyers will attract. Everywhere I see, I see false claims. Even good, dermatology-approved eye creams do very little, and cannot solve any of these problems 100%. You have to remember, which I said before in other posts that doing skin care can prevent the problem rather than repair it. Even it does it’s very little. To know why I am saying this you have to know the science behind eye skin problems.
The Truth of Eye Creams
We should not judge a product by its price and claims. Sometimes expensive products claim something we believe normally because we think why a brand like this takes this huge amount if it does nothing! Most eye creams are made of the same ingredients as eye creams. Without any fear, I’m saying that big magazines like Byrdie claim wrong that we need separate creams for the eye area because they are sensitive and delicate. That’s true skin around the eye is delicate but not because it’s different because it’s thinner.
There’s no special ingredient in eye creams that is not already in face creams or can’t be. People need to get it before putting money into eye creams. Scientifically there’s no evidence of anything that eye creams claims or no special ingredients that are specific to eye creams. Eye creams are also water-based like face creams. If an eye cream contains a lot of oils that are not even good for your eye area because that can make the skin unbreathable. Any eye cream you’ll see you can see that its first ingredient is water. This means it contains a lot of water more than any other ingredients. Then any humectant which helps to absorb water from the environment, then oily ingredients or occlusives for preventing evaporation of hydration. An emulsifier to mix oily and watery ingredients Just like any other face cream. This has become a marketing tool to sell the same product in less quantity for more money.
Do We Need Special Care For Around Eye Skin?
The skin around the eye is thinner, so more fragile. Because it’s thinner than other areas it tends to dry quicker. Dry skin eventually looks fatigued because of growing fine lines and wrinkles. We have thinner skin in some places in our body like behind the knees, and cheek. But because of rapid eye movement, it stresses the area a lot. That creates a tired look, wrinkles, and puffiness. As well as because we smile and eat smile lines can come with aging too. UV rays damage every type of cell including hair. But around the eye, the skin is very thin it gets wrinkled fast. Dark circles can come from sun damage. But also can form genetically or from less sleep. So the answer is, as eyes move constantly and for thinner skin, the eye area needs special attention.
Still, I’m not saying you need an eye cream. A moisturizer can contain everything you need for the eye area. I suggest applying your moisturizer double the amount/time around your eyes you do for your face. If you apply moisturizer two times a day then apply the same moisturizer four times around the eye or mouth. I do because I have light smile lines. Use your hydrating skin/essence/serum around your eye in an adequate amount. You can double apply light products like these for better hydration. Skin (Toner), Essence, Serum can penetrate the skin and restore hydration better. While moisturizers protect the hydration level of the skin.
Good Ingredients for Skin
These ingredients are good for around eyes. Some brighten, and some reduce puffiness. Find moisturizers, and serums with these ingredients and make them your two-in-one cream!
Caffeine helps to reduce puffiness. Squalane and Hyaluronic acid hydrate and soothes the skin. Vitamin C even out the skin tone deals with dark spots, and makes skin shiny! Retinol helps with aging problems. It increases firmness but dehydrates the skin. So please use the hydrating product after and before. Glycerine also hydrates and plumps the skin. Green tea is a very good anti-oxidant that also provides moisture.
