In this article, we will know very basic rules of sewing, some common problems their causes, and how to solve them.

Sewing

Basic Rules for Stitching

  • Rotate the balance wheel only in the way it rotates when the machine is running.
  • Increase the thread take-up lever to its topmost position at starting and ending.
  • Use the knee lifter to increase the presser foot instead of the hand lifter during sewing.
  • Look at stitch tension on two plies of material.
  • Begin from right side, so that all the volume remains to the left of the needle.
  • Keep the speed same.
  • While rotating at corners, rotate with the needle inside the fabric, to avoid missing a stitch.
  • Increase the take-up lever to the highest position, make sure that the needle is not inside the material. Increase the presser foot and pull out the fabric to remove the fabric being stitched.
  • Cut the threads close to the fabric and leave about 3 inches thread hanging out.

Sewing Problems – Reasons – Solutions

You may face or are facing some problem while stitching. Problems are listed below. These are common problems everyone faced. I will explain how to solve them, so don’t worry, keep reading.

Problem 1: Needle Thread Breaking

Reason

  • If you thread the needle incorrectly, you will face this problem
  • Incorrect upper tension.

Solution

  • Check the Thread Tension and Adjust it. If there is extra pressure in upper thread reduce it by spinning the nut on the tension regulator anti-clockwise.
  • Check the needle if it’s straight and in good condition then put the needle correctly.
  • Even everything is right , thread breaking can simply caused by poor thread quality. So, use a braded thread.

Problem 2: Bobbin Thread breaking

Reason

  • Sharp edges of bobbin case.
  • Incorrect lower tension.

Solution

  • Check the Thread Tension and Adjust it. If there is extra pressure in lower thread reduce the bobbin case tension.
  • If your bobbin case has sharp edges, change it.
  • Bobbin should be evenly wounded.

Problem 3: Needle breaking

Reason

  • Very fine needle comparing to the fabric. See this for Needle Guide, I hope this will be helpful.
  • Wrong pressure in presser foot.

Solution

Problem 4: Skipped stitches

Reason

  • Wrongly threaded needle.
  • Wrongly installed needle.
  • Lack of Pressure in Presser Foot.
  • Needle is too fine for the fabric.
  • Poor condition of the needle.

Solution

Problem 5: Crowded stitches

Reason

  • When fabric is not fed properly through the sewing machine it happens

Solution

Problem 6: Loops on the top & Under side of work

Reason

Solution

Top-Side:
  • There may be a lack of tension on the bobbin thread. Check and correct it.
  • If upper tension is too tight reduce the upper tension by spinning the nut on the tension regulator in the anti-clockwise direction.
Under Side:
  • If the bobbin tension is too tight, take out from the bobbin case and correct the tension. Or, in other case the bobbin may be saturated and not allowing the thread to come out freely from the bobbin case. In that case simply remove some thread from the bobbin.
  • If upper tension is too loose, increase the tension on the upper thread by rotating the nut on the tension regulator in the clockwise direction

Problem 7: Fabric is not needing properly

Reason

  • Lack of pressure on the Presser Foot.
  • Wrong Stich regulating.

Solution

Problem 8: Wrinkles on both layers of the fabrics

Reason

  • Wrong Size Needle.
  • Both Upper and Lower tension is extra amount.
  • Poor needle condition.

Solution

As you know by now, in most cases problem is caused by incorrect pressure on the presser foot or wrong tension, or by choosing a wrong needle. So it is really not too tuft to correct these. All the best! Happy sewing!
