Types of Sewing Machine

Hand Operated Sewing Machine

The rapid development of sewing technology has introduced a wide range of sewing machines. After knowing different types of sewing machines you may feel that you will never need them, but it used at a time.

The main three types of sewing machines are discussed below in the first three points.

1. Hand Operated Sewing Machine

Hand Operated Sewing machines are the oldest of all forms. So, it is obvious that the speed is very slow. It is operated by hand as the name suggests. It has a handle attached to the balance wheel. If you want to collect something vintage you may collect this otherwise it takes forever to sew something.

2. Treadle Sewing Machine

The opposite of Hand Operated Sewing machine! No, I’m not talking about speed, I mean, of course, it is faster than hand-operated but slower than an electric machine. I am saying that they are operated by feet! That’s right! These machines are placed on a stand that has a treadle, where you place your feet. The forward and backward movement of the feet helps to run the machine. As you’re using your feet, your hands are free to handle fabrics. The balance of the wheel is attached to the treadle with a belt.

3. Electric Sewing Machine

Or, Motorized Sewing Machine which is really fast. It can be used for industrial purposes. The balance of the wheel is attached to the motor with a belt. There is also a treadle operated by afoot.

Now, there are many subcategories overlapped with each other, But we are learners and we will know them. You can decide later which one you need the most!

4. Domestic Sewing Machine

As the name suggesting this is a home sewing machine perfect for your hobby. Because it is very simple to use no need to be an expert. You can do decorative sewing, zig-zag stitches, etc. But the disadvantage is you can’t sew too many layers together, so it will be a little time-consuming. But that is why it is a domestic sewing machine na?

5. Industrial Sewing Machine

So now with an industrial sewing machine, you can guess that you can sew multiple layers of fabrics with this sewing machine in less time, with high speed. As you can operate it with a thick layer, you can sew woolen, knitted fabrics. The stitches will come out of high quality, balanced. But the disadvantage is the high cost of the industrial sewing machine. Again, It’s industrial, so why not it will be highly-priced? After all, it is worth the price.

6. Mechanical Sewing Machine

Mechanical Sewing machines are affordable. If it is your first purchase you can try this. These work on a single motor that turns gears and belts of the machine.

7. Mini Sewing Machine

As the name suggests a mini sewing machine is very small and portable. These are very cheap. You can do little simple sewings, alterations in straight lines. Some may have features like zig-zag lines. But this is not a very durable option because you can’t do any heavy stitching in this.

8. Overlock Sewing Machine

Or, Serger used to seam the fabrics. So, basically, these machines are used to join the edges of fabrics and give a finishing look to the garment. Overlock machines have an inbuilt cutter to cut the uneven edges of the fabric. Overlock machines make loops of stitches over the fabric edges. Its pattern depends on the number of threads. Single thread overlock is of course very weak. More the threads stronger the stitches are. the width and length of the stitch can be customized by the user.

9. Lockstitch Machine

Lockstitch machines can be used for the sewing business. It can handle heavy duties. It uses two threads one on the top and the other on the bobbin. The stitching looks the same on both sides of the fabric. It can sew straight and zig-zag.

10. Blind Stitch Machine

It is used for lots. When you are stitching for business and have to stitch a lot of trousers fast, these can be used. These machines are usually used in industries.

11. Embroidery Sewing Machine

As the name suggests these are for embroidery works. Sounds beautiful right? These are advanced sewing machines with many built-in embroidery designs. It has its own memory, and you also can use USB ports to import more designs! You also can mix, edit, and can make new designs. Nowadays it has the advanced feature of previewing the designs you made on a screen. These are also on the expensive side.

12. Computerized Sewing Machine

Computerized Sewing machines are highly efficient, big in size, can be connected to the internet, best suitable for industries. These are probably best suitable for industries now. It has multiple needles and spool spinners for different colors of threads. You can do beautiful embroidering, quilting, smocking, and other craftings. These machines are very fast and can handle any heavy duty. But the disadvantages are these are very highly-priced. You need to have professional expertise in this department. Also, many functions come with many errors as always, so you need a technical person. I don’t know your thoughts but in my opinion, the great it sounds is worth every penny but may not be ideal for home uses.
